Pre-launch 2010 – 19 November 2009 – British Museum
Since 2004, the event has taken place at Tate Modern, the MPS’s Empress State Building, the Congress House, The Royal Courts of Justice and a school in Hackney. This year, not only did the pre-launch event take place at the British Museum, it also covered a whole day.

A teachers surgery took place allowing those present to ask questions to other teachers who have already organised event for the Month in their schools. Marion Reichart has written a report on this session summarising the main points that were made. You can download it by clicking here (Word document).
The formal pre-launch event in the evening saw contibutions from Andrew Burnett, Assistant Director of the British Museum and Ben Bradshaw MP, Culture Secretary, among many others. A full report of the event can be downloaded here (Word document).
On the occasion of the pre-launch, the British Museum launched an online trail highlighting items in its collections with special LGBT interest. The trail can be seen on the BM’s site, here.
The Shropshire Archives have produced a DVD, Some People Are Gay, Get Over It, about their local LGBT history. A powerpoint presentation about the project can be downloaded here (7.5Mb).

Liz Willows of Camden LGBT Forum shows a presentation developed for assemblies and classroom workshops. It challenges homophobia and transphobia and increase awareness of the diversity of LGBT people. The presentation encourages young people to adopt an LGBT “hero” and, for older school groups, covers some of the history of the last 42 years. |

It was produced in collaboration with Central School of Speech and Drama and aimed at Key Stage 4 and 5 students. It will be touring the country as part of LGBT History Month 2010. |

“Anne Lister’s Diaries: The Rosetta Stone of 19th Century Lesbianism.” The discovery and publication of Anne Lister’s diaries by Helena Whitbread in 1988 challenged previous conceptions about lesbianism in early 19th Century Britain. Anne Lister owned Shibden Hall in Halifax. The presenters, all from Halifax, will provide an intriguing introduction to this fascinating lesbian. |
