LGBT History Month Pre-Launch for 2013
Posted on: May 2nd, 2012 by History Month 1 Comment

Mark November the 15th down in your diaries. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) History Month pre-launch is to be held at Bletchley Park this year on that very Thursday.

The event has in the past been held at the Tate Modern, Congress House, The Metropolitan Police Princess Building, The Royal Courts of Justice, The Hackney Free and Parochial School, the British Museum, Twickenham Rugby Football stadium and most recently the Kia Oval Cricket Ground. This year it is outside London for the first time. To celebrate the centenary of Alan Turing it will be at the headquarters where he cracked the Enigma Code and formed the first computer.

Bletchley Park is easy to reach because it’s on the edge of Milton Keynes, which is near the centre of England. Milton Keynes Coachway is accessible by national Express from anywhere. Bletchley station is on the main line from London Euston to Northampton and Milton Keynes is served by Virgin and Silverlink trains to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and the North West and Scotland. It’s half-way between Oxford and Cambridge and it’s where the M1 the A5 and the A423 meet

The purpose of the Pre-Launch is to remind people that LGBT History Month is in February and to get them preparing events. There is a range of resources; and there is a curriculum-related theme. So history was at the British Museum, Sport was Twickenham and the Oval and Bletchley Park is for Maths and science.

This all day event will involve: pupils from local schools visiting the Alan Turing exhibition, breaking codes and learning new lessons in the morning; university students having bespoke tours and a debate on the relationship between science and the LGBT community in the afternoon; and a more formal event with keynote speakers in the evening – of which we would like you to be one. Our key theme is empowering young LGBT people through visibility and education and we would be delighted if you could come and speak for ten minutes in the evening
