Every 85 minutes, someone dies from suicide in the UK and the risk is elevated for LGBT adolescents. There were 6,188 suicides in 2015 in the UK, compared with 1,730 deaths by traffic accidents. 31 people drowned in the Thames in 2015, which is double the number of cyclist deaths in London.
The location and distinctive infrastructure of the City and Canary Wharf can provide different vehicles for suicide; the City of London Corporation and Business Healthy are committed to playing a core role in reducing this tragic loss of life, with the help and support of the local business community. This collaboration is vital to guaranteeing the success of preventative measures.
The causes of suicide are complex and approximately 90 per cent of people who die by suicide have a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health problem at their time of death. Whatever the circumstances, suicide has a profound effect on entire communities, including those within a workplace.
Following well-attended sessions held in the past, Business Healthy and the Samaritans, supported by Clifford Chance, are hosting another suicide prevention awareness training session, aimed at those looking after health and wellbeing, facilities or security, within businesses of all sizes in the City and Canary Wharf.
The Samaritans-led workshop aims to equip individuals with the tools to identify mental illness among staff members they have responsibility for, such as core listening skills, to build resilient teams and to either provide support themselves or to be able signpost team members to existing services, ensuring that for those experiencing problems, suicide is not the way out.
Spaces are limited, and are reserved on a first come, first served basis. A light breakfast and refreshments will be provided. Half of all profits from the training session will be donated to Samaritans’ Central London branch.
Here is some feedback we’ve received from previous attendees:
•”Excellent session and very informative”
•”This is a difficult subject that was communicated with compassion and sensitivity to provide a valuable learning experience”
•”Even though I have experience in this field, the training has increased and added to my understanding”
•”In the organisation I work in we already deliver ‘managing mental health’ workshops and this workshop was a lovely refresher and CPD”
•”Knowledgeable speakers and good Q&A session”
•”Makes me see how important it is to step in if you see someone who looks like they’re suicidal”
•”I would like this to be available to everyone in my organisation”
•Will Skinner, Regional Partnerships Officer, Samaritans
•Karen Gill, Deputy Director – Mentoring at Inner South West London branch, Samaritans
